Biography:
Mesbah Uddin is the director of the North Carolina Motorsports and Automotive Research Center and a professor of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science at UNC Charlotte. He is the current chair of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) aerodynamics committee and a member of AIAA Turbulence Model Benchmarking working group. Dr. Uddin also served as a member of the North Carolina Governor’s Motorsports Advisory Council from 2012 to 2017.
Since 1984, he served both in industry and in academia in different parts of the world. Prior to joining UNC Charlotte in 2008, he was employed by Exa Corporation to serve at Dodge Motorsports Engineering (DME), Chrysler Technical Center in Auburn Hills, Michigan. While at DME, he was involved in Dodge NASCAR, NHRA, and street-car aerothermal development programs.
At UNC Charlotte, Dr. Uddin’s research interest extends from the fundamental fluid dynamics of canonical flows to the flows of applied industrial interest using both experimental and numerical techniques. Over the past 10 years, his research group at UNC Charlotte has been involved with the aerodynamic development programs of NASCAR, Indy Car, NHRA and GT racecars.
His group played a major role in the aerodynamic design of the 2016 Dodge Viper ACR, sometimes labeled as the fastest street-legal race car. In addition, his research group is actively involved with the fuel economy and passenger comfort improvement activities of road vehicles. Dr. Uddin graduated four Ph.D. and 16 master’s students, and is currently supervising eight Ph.D. and eight master’s students. Additionally, he supervised more than two dozen undergraduate capstone projects.
He has published over 50 journal and peer reviewed conference proceeding articles, gave numerous technical presentations and invited talks in various forums, and appeared frequently on electronic media as a subject matter expert on racecar aerodynamics. He obtained his bachelor and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, and Ph.D. from the University of Melbourne, Australia.
